How it came to be:
It all started with our first international customer. At our workshop, we celebrate all achievements no matter how big or small and getting our first international order was no exception. We reached out to the customer and asked if there is anything that we could add to the shipment as a thank you for being our first. They mentioned that their son was fascinated with the night sky and that he has wanted a small display of a constellation. When I was drawing the design I was trying to capture what traveling towards a constellation would look like. The first draft had a plain black background that looked flat and static. I decided on adding blue because of blueshift, the displacement of the spectrum to shorter wavelengths in the light coming from distant celestial objects moving toward the observer. In other words, as light emitting objects, like stars, travel towards an observer they seem more blue. So in my mind, traveling towards a constellation is black and blue. I still use that same design with minor tweaks and retouches.
How it's made:
After an order is placed we receive the personalization and first check if we have the constellation already drawn. If we do not we start drawing that particular constellation. Then we place the custom text in the text ring after which the design part is done. Crafting starts with laser engraving the design and cutting a rim to be glued at a later stage. The coasters are then painted by hand and the rim is glued to them and left to dry. After they are dried 3-4 light coats of lacquer are sprayed on them to seal and waterproof them. The filigree holder is made in the same way. After they are laser cut they are hand painted, glued and then sealed with lacquer. The walnut holders are cut on a CNC, have their edges routered and are then sanded. They are coated with a mineral oil and left to dry.
